What are the benefits of lidar-assisted control in the design of a wind turbine?

Abstract. This paper explores the potential benefits brought by integration of lidar-assisted control (LAC) in design a wind turbine. The study identifies which drivers can be relaxed LAC, as well how much these could reduced before other conditions become drivers. A generic LAC load-reduction model is defined and used to redesign rotor tower three representative turbines, differing terms class, size, power rating. load reductions enabled are save mass, increase hub height, or extend lifetime. For first two strategies, results suggest only modest levelized cost energy, with essentially limited large offshore machine. On hand, lifetime extension appears most effective way exploiting effects LAC.
